So here's an update on the Indian runner who may be stripped of a medal after undergoing a gender test. In case you've never heard of a gender test or are curious as to what it entails, check out the article from slate.com. I thought going to the gynecologist was pretty darn invasive, but this takes the cake.
I can't quite wrap my mind around this. I know there's more than one angle to this, but for some reason, I'm curious as to others' opinions. To me, gender should not have to be proven. If someone is living as a woman and competes as a woman, why should there be any question of that person's gender? Isn't this a problem?
It reminds me of Judith Butler's Gender Troubles and the fluidity of gender. However, I'm not the most knowledgeable about gender and am completely open to other conversations about this.

One issue is, of course, the absolute fact that men are better at atheltics than women (please, note sarcasm). Really, it just a common assumption/belief, so if a male competes as a female, "he" will be precieved as having a biological advantage. So the discourse embedded in the one issue really is American/Western assumptions of male biological superiority and the need to maintain that belief at all costs.

second, that was my point, that there is a perceived notion that men are better athletes than women. i know there are "scientific" studies out there regarding this issue, but the more i read these "studies", the more I tend to believe they all have agendas they are secretly trying to meet, and they aren't all scientific.
besides the fact, this guy/girl placed second - so what does that say?
